Travel and Tourism About Sheffield One of the north’s key cities, Sheffield is a major metropolitan city and is home to over half a million people. Yet tight restrictions on development have ensured that the beauty of the adjoining Peak District National Park has not been compromised. As a result the urban area of Sheffield has excellent shopping facilities and a fantastic range of bars and restaurants, while the Peak District National Park on its doorstep offers breathtaking views of the spectacular countryside nearby.

The city also has a plethora of parks and woodland areas within its bounds, and set as it is in the rolling Yorkshire hills just east of the Pennines, Sheffield boasts some of the best views in the country. In fact Sheffield has more trees per person than any city in Europe and despite its great size it has been informally termed ” the largest village in England “.

Compere Jimmy Carol is something of an institution in Sheffield. Instead of an actual comedy spot, the funnies were delivered by this most formidable of clubland figures, between the performances of the other acts. Incidentally Carol was also celebrating his birthday on the big night in Sheffield, which was even more reason for his fine fettle. The Best All-Round Entertainer award went to Gary Phillips, who opened with the Michael Buble arrangement of Moondance which, in all honesty, this good looking and talented entertainer looked a little bit lost with.

Phillips has the look of someone with a wealth of material at his fingertips but is not altogether sure how to mix and match it all together. The point was emphasised by a parody of the Green Green Grass of Home, which frankly did him no favours. Petite, blonde and well dressed, Sarah Lee Scott is the female vocalist category winner and proud as punch she was too.

The category Best Senior Vocal Entertainer, I can only assume, refers to the age of an artist and ex-Fortunes member Glen Dale, who is still rattling out hits such as You Got Your Troubles from his days with the band that made him famous. Feigning the use of a walking stick when entering the stage area, Dale was soon showing why age, which seems to be such a barrier in this ageist industry of ours, is surely not that important, provided the prerequisite of talent remains undiminished and that entertainers who are more mature in years can often replace youthful exuberance with their warmth and sheer likeability.

Completing the first half were best trio winners 2 Out Of 3. This self-contained, semi-live, three-piece band boast a Meatloaf tribute guy and two other musicians and their place in the tribute market must be pretty much assured, if pitched correctly, fee wise. After a huge over blown introduction, it was the turn of the top live band award winners and a welcome return for legendary northern clubland figure Roy Johnson, who is lead singer of the band in question, Smartass.

The original line up of this band had quite a pedigree and this time around the new Smartass boast some pretty tight and impressive musicians and their charismatic frontman is just as edgy, charismatic and larger than life as ever.

History[ edit ] Below Doncaster , the main channel of the lower Don originally meandered in a north-easterly direction across the marshland of Hatfield Chase to enter the Trent just above its junction with the Ouse. A second channel flowed to the north, along a Roman channel called Turnbridgedike. In the Hatfield Level drainage project which started in , the Dutch civil engineer Cornelius Vermuyden diverted the Don northwards along Turnbridgedike.

He constructed Dikesmarsh bank some distance to the east of the channel, so that the intervening land could be used as washlands. The main work was completed by , but after flooding in , a “Great Sluice” was constructed at the junction between the river and the Aire, with 17 openings which were 6 by 8 feet 1. The washlands had insufficient capacity, and in work started on a new channel, which would run for 5 miles 8.

Share this article Share Two former officers, Jon House and Paul Broadbent, are currently being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission over their handling of child sexual exploitation allegations in the town, the BBC reported. The corporation also obtained a document from the force’s intelligence base which apparently shows that girls aged as young as 12 to 15 were subjected to abuse including rape, trafficking, physical assaults, abduction and threats to kill.

It is alleged that in many cases there was no evidence of police action being taken. One victim, remaining anonymous, told the BBC she was surprised with the way the force handled the situation when she reported allegations of abuse. I can’t believe they haven’t really done anything. Sarah Champion, a Rotherham MP, took to Twitter this evening following the reports of Sheffield sex abuse Mr Brookes, an ex-officer, said he believed the alleged sex abuse in Sheffield pictured is ‘bigger than Rotherham’.

Professor Jay conducted a report into widespread sexual exploitation in Rotherham last year Mr Brookes said that following the successful prosecution, at least two detectives urged senior officers — including Mr House and Mr Broadbent who are both now under investigation – to continue their inquiries. However, he said that despite offering to head-up a unit dedicated to supporting victims and gathering evidence, the force seemed to turn a blind eye.

He told BBC News at Gary Birchall, a former analyst, said he was asked to report on the operation but was told the whole probe had been shelved after he advised a full investigation should be launched.

Early history[ edit ] Rotherham in the late Medieval period Iron Age and Roman settlements dot the area covered by the district, including a small Roman fort to the south-west in the upper flood meadow of the Don at Templeborough. Rotherham was founded in the very early Middle Ages. The river name was carried into Old English from Brittonic branch of Celtic words: Following the Norman Conquest an absentee lord held the most inhabited manor , Nigel Fossard however today’s city proper takes in eight outyling Domesday estates.

The Domesday ‘Book’ or Survey records this lord of the manor with a Norman name took the place of the Saxon lord Hakon holding 20 years before in and was tenant of an overlord of hundreds of such manors, Robert de Mortain , the Conqueror’s half-brother. The central assets at the time were medium in rank among manors: The manor’s other resources were a church, four loosely called ‘acres’ of meadow, and seven of woodland.

Rotherham had a mill valued at an ordinary half of one pound sterling. In the mid 13th century, John de Vesci and Ralph de Tili gave all their possessions in Rotherham to Rufford Abbey , a period of growing wealth in the church. The monks collected tithes from the town and gained rights to an extra market day on Monday and to extend the annual fair from two to three days.

It was suppressed in but revived in as the feoffees of the common lands of Rotherham, and remains in existence. It was the first brick building in what is now South Yorkshire and taught theology , religious chant and hymns , grammar and writing. The college was dissolved in in the reign of Edward VI , its assets stripped for the crown to grant to its supporters. Very little remains of the original building in College Street.
